Jokes of nature. Joan Fontcuberta

    11 July- 29 October 2001

Featuring in this exhibition were the disappearance into space of a Soviet astronaut, fantastic creatures, constellations that do not exist and other photographic stories by the Spaniard Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona 1955), an artist who has, through her work, conducted a systematic attack on pre-packaged truth. The exhibition offered a selection of her principal work cycles: Herbarium (1982-1985), Fauna (1985-1989), Costellazioni (Constellations) (1993-1999), Sputnik (1996-1998), L'artista e la fotografia (The artists and photography) (1995-1998), and Emogrammi. All these works play with photography's inherent possibility for manipulation, showing its virtual potential for falsification and introducing doubt into every visual communication.
