A work of art in 20 minutes, right before dinner

A new edition of spot!, a pre-dinner rendez-vous offering a guide to the appreciation and interpretation of a work of art, is returning to the Palazzo delle Esposizioni following the enormous success of the lectures on Caravaggio at the Scuderie del Quirinale.  To mark the exhibitions on Nature According to De Chirico, Mimmo Jodice and Giulio Paolini. These and Those (The Enigma of Time), running from 9 April through 11 July, we are offering a full program of lectures on works of art by these three great Italian artists.  The lectures are designed to accompany the visitor on a virtual tour in several stages, ranging from the paintings of Giorgio de Chirico to the pictures of celebrated photographer Mimmo Jodice and the installation that Giulio Paolini designed especially for this season of shows and to tie in ideally with the exhibition on De Chirico.
The event, organized by the Azienda Speciale Palaexpo's Educational Services - Art Workshop, which is due to get under way on 15 April, will be hosted by art historian Anna Maria Panzera (Giorgio de Chirico) and by Daniela Lancioni, a curator with the Palazzo delle Esposizioni (Jodice and Paolini).

spot! Giulio Paolini - These and Those (The Enigma of Time)
a guide to the appreciation of a work of art

Daniela Lancioni, curator of the exhibition, will talk about Giulio Paolini. These and Those (The Enigma of Time), 2009 - 2010

The frame and the threshold are the key elements for deciphering Paolini's installation entitled These and Those (The Enigma of Time), in which the face of a clock, quotations and self-quotations, a sequence of 45 projected images with visitors, heavenly bodies and an artist's tools and with the effigy of Giorgio de Chirico from his Naked Self-Portrait, dated 1943, come together to personify the enigma of a work of art. In this work, produced specifically for the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, the artist uses the symbolic shapes of a frame and a threshold to maneuver the boundary of objects, declining his vocabulary in a series of variants that ensure its constant transmission and renewal.

a guide to the appreciation of a work of art

Anna Maria Panzera, art historian, will talk about Ritorno di Ebdomeros, 1968, by Giorgio de Chirico

Nature and architecture merge into full-fledged inventories of symbols to create the backdrop for the life of a legendary figure, which is none other than the painter himself, a bizarre display of the mechanics of his thinking.

spot! Mimmo Jodice - Vedute di Napoli, Rivisitazioni, Eden
a a guide to the appreciation of a work of art

Daniela Lancioni, curator of the exhibition, will talk about Vedute di Napoli (Views of Naples) (1978-1980), Rivisitazioni (Revisitations), Eden (1994-1997) by Mimmo Jodice

The photographs grouped in the sections entitled Views of Naples and Revisitations mark a milestone in the photographer's work. The human figure has gone, while a few well-known, almost routine, not to say clichéd details of the landscape are translated in a bewildering manner with images that possess theeffectiveness of icons, and which critics have christened "metaphysical". The most recent cycle, Eden, is a metaphor of the daily violence, both persuasive and pervasive, with which we are lured by our induced and ephemeral needs.

a guide to the appreciation of a work of art

Anna Maria Panzera, art historian, will talk about Piazza d’Italia con Arianna, 1935-1940, by Giorgio de Chirico.

Classicism as nostalgia, idealization, melancholy. This is one of his numerous attempts to reaffirm romantic sentiment in a world that appears to freeze in its own void.

spot! Mimmo Jodice - Mediterraneo
a guide to the appreciation of a work of art

Daniela Lancioni, curator of the exhibition, will talk about Mediterraneo by Mimmo Jodice

A journey undertaken from the mid-eighties on into the culture of ancient Greece, its peaks and the spread of its influence; a journey through different times and places, confirming the self-reflective nature of Jodice's work as, in Mediterraneo, he travels back to explore his own cultural roots. The artist also used these photographs to experiment freely during the printing phase, confirming the crucial role played by the work done in the darkroom.

spot! Giorgio de Chirico - Le Muse inquietanti
a guide to the appreciation of a work of art

Anna Maria Panzera, art historian, will talk about Le Muse inquietanti, 1925, by Giorgio de Chirico

One of his most famous paintings, where mythology meets its double and becomes a mannequin with no aura, immersed in a space that does not belong to it, bathed in a still Mediterranean light.

Anna Maria Panzera, art historian, will talk about La matinée angoissante, 1912, by Giorgio de Chirico

Mystery concealed in the shadows, the solitude of spaces familiar yet alien, the bewilderment of contemporary man for whom the horizon is no longer reference, no longer a focal point.

spot! Mimmo Jodice - Mare and Natura
a guide to the appreciation of a work of art

Daniela Lancioni, curator of the exhibition, will talk about Mare and Natura by Mimmo Jodice

The photographs in the cycle entitled Mare (Sea), executed from the late nineties on, are images purged of all human or urban presence, images that the artist interprets as interior landscapes, as he endeavors to confer a timeless dimension on the world. Along with the work displayed in the most recent of the series on show in the exhibition, they reveal the beauty of Natura (Nature) and redeem the damage it has suffered.
